While the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed more than two years earlier, many enslaved people in Texas had not yet learned they were free.This history is what gives Juneteenth its unique significance. It reminds us that freedom was not experienced equally or at the same time by all Americans. By recognizing Juneteenth alongside other milestones in our nation’s history, we gain a more complete understanding of the journey toward freedom and equality.The theme of balance is not about replacing one story with another. Rather, it is about ensuring that all stories are included in our understanding of the past. When we acknowledge different experiences and perspectives, we create a richer and more accurate picture of our shared history.Juneteenth also encourages us to keep learning.
