For our 2024 IP year in review, one thing is clear: the drive for innovation is alive and thriving in a post-COVID world. This year saw groundbreaking advancements across industries. Millions of freshly granted patents were added to our database, underscoring the relentless pace of innovation.  

Worldwide, Artificial Intelligence (AI) was the topic on everyone’s minds, with promises to revolutionize the landscape profoundly. This year, we leveraged our over-a-decade-long expertise with machine learning and AI. This allowed us to launch disruptive tools that simplify complex challenges and deliver actionable insights to the innovation community. And, the journey doesn’t end here—we’re excited to bring even more transformative solutions in the coming year. 

Here’s our IP year in review, looking at how we brought clarity to innovation and engaged with the global community. We published insightful industry reports and released revolutionary product development. 

Bringing AI disruption to patent analytics 

In 2024, we expanded our AI capabilities to bring clarity and efficiency to innovation processes. Our longstanding expertise in machine learning, honed through years of translating patent documents and developing classification tools, allowed us to deliver cutting-edge solutions. Enabling quicker access to insights and lowering the entry barrier to patent analytics are core driving principles for when and how we enable AI in our patent analytics solutions, whether it is machine learning AI to extract accurately the patent data you need for technology landscaping or patent searching or Generative AI to create the analysis and content you need.

Advancing our product suite: LexisNexis® PatentSight+™ and beyond 

Our product teams made remarkable strides in enhancing our solutions to enable our users to deliver more business-critical insights from patent information. The latest advancements that we brought to our flagship platform: PatentSight+™  ensure that customers benefit from finer-grained and information-rich data. Here’s a recap of the major releases we had to our innovation solutions: 

  1. LexisNexis® TechDiscovery: Our latest stand-alone application is an AI-powered search that enables rapid technology screening and exploration, empowering users to uncover relevant patent landscapes and gain valuable insights within minutes. With its intuitive interface and advanced generative AI capabilities, LexisNexis TechDiscovery democratizes the discovery process, allowing users with any patent search experience to explore new technology areas, identify potential licensing opportunities, and stay ahead of the competition.  
  2. Patent Family Trees: This feature transforms how users visualize patent relationships, enabling strategic insights into filing types, legal statuses, and family structures. Users can now trace filing strategies and share interactive visuals effortlessly.   
  3. Classification enhancements: Updates to LexisNexis® Classification introduced a redesigned interface, feedback integration, and direct access to classification tools, ensuring precise and user-friendly experiences. 
  4. AI-Powered classification builder: With a seamless interface, users can build custom classifiers that align with their organizational taxonomies, enhancing the relevance of insights. 
  5. Streamlined Collaboration: New features allow users to share workbooks, templates, and custom fields with ease. Notifications and messaging add context and improve efficiency in team collaborations. 
  6. Technology Clusters update: We brought significant updates to our unique clustering feature. This allows users to slice and dice patents based on expert-curated technology clusters. Our updates significantly improved cluster accuracy and family coverage to ensure more accurate results and that more patents are included in the clusters. 
  7. New litigation data: Over 13,000 litigation and patent board documents were added to the database, enabling sharper competitive intelligence. 

Global engagement: A year of IP insights and events 

Continuing our annual recognition of innovation leadership, we produced the third edition of the Innovation Momentum report. In this year’s report, Innovation Momentum: The Global Top 100 Patent Organizations, Pharmaceuticals remained at the top of industries with the most representation, followed by Semiconductors and IT. The rise of Standard Essential Patents

The rapid advancement of telecommunications technologies has given rise to the complex world of Standard Essential Patents (SEPs). SEPs are patents deemed indispensable for implementing standardized technologies and are often subject to strict licensing frameworks. These patents serve as the backbone of global standards in critical sectors like 5G, IoT, and AI-driven systems, Navigating their licensing landscape has become increasingly intricate. Therefore, by leveraging our SEPs analytics solution LexisNexis® IPlytics™, we analyzed the patent landscapes, looking at the top 40 major SEP owners in the following technology spaces:

This year also saw a full return to global in-person engagements. We were able to connect with like-minded professionals across the innovation and technology spectrum. Across the USA, Europe and Asia, we participated in 30+ major events and tradeshows. And, we joined in the global conversations around IP data and analytics.  

Connecting with leaders in innovation at the China Intellectual Property Annual Conference in Beijing. 

We had the privilege of hosting our users in Japan. The collaborative day focused on exchanging insights into patent analytics. This provided a valuable opportunity to collaborate on solving their regular patent analytics challenges. And, we explored how our latest advancements can address their information needs effectively. 

2024 IP Year in Review Japan User Meeting

The LNIP team with our customers during the summer edition of our Japan User Meeting 2024. 

From exploring generative AI’s impact on IP at various events in South Korea like the Korean IP Association conference or the PATent INformation EXpo (PATINEX) to diving deep into competitive patent strategies with IPWatchdog, we joined in multiple platforms on global conversation around IP data and intelligence. In Korea and China, this year we participated in multiple events and conferences. We presented our insights into innovation and connecting meaningfully with leaders from across industries.

We represented our vision of bringing clarity to innovation at the IP conference in China. Our team presented on topics ranging from the impact of leveraging AI in patent analytics to the strategies in responding to NPE threats in the US. Also, we had discussions with certain industry leaders around SEPs and navigating FRAND licensing negotiations by leveraging IP insights.

PatentSight+ Summit: Bringing together global innovation leader

Apart from the third-party events, we hosted our own IP event this year, the PatentSight+ Summit in Germany. We fostered a space for meaningful discussions on patent analytics and strategy. Accordingly, we brought together over 100 thought leaders from the intellectual property (IP) community across more than 20 countries and 80 companies. Leading up to the summit, a delegation of 20 IP professionals from Japan had the opportunity to participate in business exchange meetings with European corporations, including BASF and SCHOTT AG. By bringing together top innovators worldwide, our goal is to cultivate and promote the innovation community. We aim to bring clarity to innovation and support the dynamic environment of IP analytics.

Looking ahead: Innovation and collaboration in 2025 

As we close 2024, we are proud to have empowered the IP community through cutting-edge solutions and collaborative engagement. Millions of patents are being filed every year. Advancements in AI and machine learning applications, quantum computing, medical technology, etc fuel this. The innovation landscape is only gearing up for a surge of patents. With industry-proven analytics, our solutions will continue to bring clarity to innovation. We’ll also enable the innovation community to make stronger decisions for the future.
